The “Terrorist or Photographer?” debate brought together an expert panel of 4 representatives, all nationally recognised leaders in their specialsed fields:
Chief Inspector Mark Payne – Head of Press & PR, West Midlands Police http://cimarkpayne.wordpress.com/
Christian Payne – Social technologist and mobile media maker http://ourmaninside.com
DCI Ian Grundy – Counter Terrorism Unit, West Midlands Police http://west-midlands.police.uk
The debate Chairperson was Jigar Patel (MA Social Media, BCU).
The debate was meant to bring together Photographers and the Police to communicate with each other on the frustration regarding Photographer’s being questioned under Section 44 of The Terrorism Act. The healthy debate provided the opportunity for the audience and the photographers to better understand the position of the Police and what they are actively doing to better train the Officers that are on the ground. The Photographers present at the debate provided the Police with ideas relating to overcoming tension between the two parties. The Police on the other hand also showed their interest in working with the Photographers community to better understand their needs in dealing with the situation. The debate ended with, both the Police and the Photographers’ community planning to work with each other in the future to learn from each other on how to better deal with the issue of Terrorist or Photographer.
